The Historical Splendor of the Queen City of the South
(Jovy Avisado-Estepa/ Oct 19, 2016)
Traveling is what makes us see the beauty of our world –- what's more is that when we travel in our own respective country, somehow it gives us a rewarding feeling of embracing our own identities – through the historical heritages, landmarks, tradition, and culture. The city of Cebu is known to be one of the most urbanized provinces in our country. Part of it is Mactan, an island where most of the notable historical past of our country has occurred. As the first place colonized by the Spaniards (headed by Ferdinand Magellan), Mactan continues its high rate on tourism through the preservation of its historical past, cultures & traditions. Check out these places that you can visit within the Queen City of the South:
Fort San Pedro
If you can still remember your Philippine history class, then you're probably familiar with the name Miguel Lopez de Legazpi –- a 'conquistador' that headed the creation of the port during the Spanish reigns in Cebu. As it was originally constructed to serve as a defense against Muslim invaders, the port continues to stand tall as a tourism destination for travellers going to Mactan.

Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino
One of the traditions imparted on us by the Spaniards is the culture of religion. Located at the very heart of Cebu City, is the Basilica Minore de Sto. Nino that is considered as the oldest Roman Catholic Church in our country. History tells us that in the exact place of the church is where the statue of a child Jesus was found – this statue is known to be the Sto. Nino de Cebu. At present, the original statue is still at the Sto. Nino Church and many devotees and devout Catholics constantly visit the area not only to pray and attend the mass, but also see and visit the statue itself and pray there.

Mactan Shrine & Lapu-Lapu Shrine
Both located in Lapu-Lapu City are shrines that will remind us of the most notable event that happened in Mactan – the battle of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and native leader, Lapu-Lapu. Both shrines were erected as a tribute to the Battle of Mactan. For one, the location of the Mactan Shrine is believed to be the exact area where Magellan was killed during his battle with the native leader. Respectively, the Lapu-Lapu shrine was erected in memorial of our native leader Lapu-Lapu who is actually considered as our first hero for he was the first person who resisted and fought against the Spanish colonization.

Alegre Guitar Factory
Deviating from the historical places of Cebu, it's time to release your inner musical inclination and visit the Alegre Guitar Factory. The factory is owned by Mr. Fernando M. Alegre, a professional musician who has been in the guitar industry for over 23 years. As one of the top brands selling handmade guitars, the factory is widely famous for making these instruments using various kinds of wood crafted for durable and high-quality guitars. Furthermore, it is considered as one of the most impressive guitar factories around the area, producing world-class guitars that are also exported to foreign countries such as The United States and Japan.
