Places to Visit When in Sagada
(Jovy Avisado-Estepa/ Oct 19, 2016)
Not too far from Baguio which is the Summer Capital of the Philippines, is a sleepy little town that many had described as “The Shire of Philippines” called Sagada. A cooler weather, pine trees, wintery atmosphere and a not too crowded vibe are some of Sagada's great charm which makes it a great alternative destination for Baguio. Planning to go on a roadtrip soon? Here are some places you need to add on your bucket list:
Hanging Coffins
Not afraid of horror movies? One of the most iconic tourist attractions in Sagada is the Hanging Coffins. It is a picture perfect sight and more realistic than any horror fictions. These hanging coffins are rooted from the old Igorot tradition of burying their loved ones that speaks highly of the tribe’s rich culture. The cadaver inside the coffins are said to be in fetal position for a highly belief that if that’s the position you enter the world, that should also be the position when you exit life.
Sumaguing and Lumiang Cave
Your Sagada trip wouldn’t be fun without trying the cave connection. Spelunking (cave exploring) both Sumaguing and Lumiang Cave takes 3-4 hours. Sumaguing cave is called “The Big Cave” for it is the largest of all the caves of Sagada. It houses a lot of amazing rock formations and narrow holes. While Lumiang Burial Cave has 200 coffins that are buried 500 years ago and is carved with lizards - this symbolizes long life and fertility.
Sagada Rice Terraces
You might actually be familiar with the more popular Banaue Rice Terraces but the terraces in Sagada are also magnificent. Made with small rocks piled on top of each other, Sagada’s rice terraces are lying beautifully on the mountain side of Suuo, Ankileng, Balugan, Kiltepan and Bangaan which are on the way going to the famous Bomod-ok Falls.
Kiltepan Viewpoint
Kiltepan viewpoint is a famous spot for its amazing view of sunrise in Sagada. Also being the highest point in the province, you can see a breathtaking view of the golden sun and the sea of clouds – a romantic way of starting the day with someone!
Bomod-ok Falls
Hidden deep in a valley, Bomod-ok Falls is a beautiful reward after an hour or two of hiking. You’ll surely feel exhausted and your legs might give up but the amazing view of nature during the hike is very encouraging. At the end of the tiring trail, jump in and feel energized by the cascading cold waters of the falls from a contoured cliff!

Can’t wait to start planning your Sagada trip? Best time to visit is from November to February. It may take a long tiring drive on the way going to Sagada to see its natural attractions, but your efforts will be greatly rewarded!
