Flight Booking 101: Why Airlines Change Flight Schedules and How to Deal With It
Posted by: jovy avisado ( Member ) on 2016-11-15
So you’ve booked your next trip months before your departure date and you’re ecstatic because you saved a lot of money. Well, congratulations! But then a month or even 2-3 weeks prior your travel date, you received an email and wham! -- There’s a schedule change in your flight itinerary.

airline schedule

A minute to half hour may be harmless, but 1-12 hours of flight change? Unacceptable. You may have experienced this great hassle once in a while, (or if you’re the luckiest person on Earth, you are yet to experience such) and have gotten mad with your travel agent or airline. Being mad is your right, for you’re not going to get what you paid for.

The sad thing is, airlines are having a tough time sticking to their schedules; hence, the usual flight delays. For what reasons? See the list below:

A. Technical / Operational Issues – airport congestion, aircraft change, inadvertent airport / craft maintenance, equipment availability, conflicting flight schedules due to delays.

B. External Factor – bad weather, strike.

How to Deal with the Flight Schedule Change?

Situation 1: What if I’m okay with the new flight schedule

If you’ve read the notification, just shrugged, and don’t care a bit, then we’re happy for you. You don’t have to do anything stressful other than contacting the airline to request for a new itinerary for you to print. Nonetheless, you can still use the e-ticket previously sent to your email, taking in mind your new flight time.

Situation 2: What if I’m not amenable with the change?

If the new schedule is unacceptable for you due to conflict with the reservations you’ve made for the trip such as accommodation and tour, get in touch with your travel agent or airline (contacting the airline directly is more advisable) as soon as possible.  You will be given options for other available schedules. First time reservation for a new itinerary is free of charge. However, if you change your mind after making the reservation, airline penalties will apply.

Situation 3: What if I got totally pissed and no longer want to travel?

If you no longer want to travel because of the changes, you may cancel your booking and file for a refund. If you bought your ticket via a travel agent, contact him immediately so he can process your refund. Reimbursement normally takes about 2 weeks to 8 months. After dumping your travel plans, a long wait for your compensation comes after.

Situation 4: What if I only learned about the change in my flight schedule upon arriving at the airport on the day of my supposed flight?

There are times when the airline misses to inform a passenger about the flight change. If you’re one of the unlucky ones who only heard the news at the airport, proceed to the ticketing booth of the airline immediately. You may request to have them book you to the next available flight the same day or on a later date, free of charge.
